Care partners and family members are the heart of this journey—their love, patience, and unwavering dedication inspire everything we do. We recognize the challenges, sacrifices, and emotional weight that come with ensuring a loved one’s well-being, and it is because of you that Dementia-Friendly Dining exists. Your strength and compassion have shaped this program, and our mission is to support and honor the incredible role you play.

Supporting You on Your Dementia Friendly Dining Journey

Dining out can be a wonderful way to connect with loved ones, but for care partners of individuals with dementia, it can also bring unique challenges. Whether it’s navigating the menu, managing distractions, or advocating for a comfortable experience, we understand the effort it takes. Dementia Friendly Dining isn’t just about the person with dementia—it’s about you, too.

At KLD Alzheimer’s Foundation, we’re committed to making dining more accessible and enjoyable for both you and your loved one. Below, you’ll find tips, resources, and tools to help create a positive experience when dining out.

Tips for Dining Out with a Loved One with Dementia

  • Choose the Right Time & Place

  • Visit the Dementia Friendly Dining Certified Restaurant List for restaurants that have completed the training program.

  • Consider visiting restaurants during non-peak hours when they are quieter and less overwhelming.

  • Ask for a table in a calm, low-stimulation area.

  • Call ahead to inform staff of any special needs or requests. You can notify the staff ahead of time that you are visiting to take advantage of Dementia Friendly Dining.

Simplify the Ordering Process

  • Opt for easy-to-read menus or bring a printed version of familiar meal choices.

  • Reduce decision fatigue by offering two simple choices instead of an entire menu.

  • Order ahead if possible to minimize wait times.

Advocate for Yourself & Your Loved One

Create a Comfortable Experience

  • Stick to routines—if your loved one enjoys a certain type of food or restaurant, return to familiar places.

  • Bring any necessary dining aids, such as adaptive utensils or a comfort item.

  • Offer easy-to-eat foods and encourage hydration.

Set Realistic Expectations & Be Flexible

  • Not every dining experience will be perfect, and that’s okay.

  • If your loved one becomes agitated, step outside or provide gentle redirection.

  • Give yourself grace—your efforts to create meaningful moments matter.
